Canon Myra B. Garnes is the Canon for Youth & Young Adult Ministries for the Diocese of Long Island. Prior to her arrival in NY, she was the Director of the Cathedral Scholars Program at the Washington National Cathedral in DC and also served as an Academic Class Dean and Director of Multicultural Education at the National Cathedral School in DC. She was installed as an Honorary Canon to the Cathedral of the Incarnation on September 26, 2015.
Canon Myra serves the larger church in several capacities as the Province II Youth Ministry Network Coordinator, a member of the Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) Mission Planning Team and as a former member of the Forma Board of Directors. She is a Youth Ministry Liaison for The Episcopal Church Office of Youth Ministries and was recently honored with the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Office of Young Adult/Campus Ministry for The Episcopal Church during the church’s General Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Canon Myra is an experienced social justice educator with extensive training and experience on issues of diversity, multiculturalism, leadership, and student development. Her professional work as a Student Affairs Administrator led her to several leadership roles on college and university campuses across the country including Macalester College, Loyola University Chicago, Appalachian State University and The Ohio State University. Myra has served as a Facilitator for the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) A World of Difference Institute, a Cluster Facilitator for The LeaderShape Institute, and a Facilitator for the National Coalition Building Institute’s (NCBI) Prejudice Reduction and Leadership Models.
Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, she is the daughter of Harold and Julia Garnes, and has an older brother, Brian, and a younger sister, Monica. She enjoys traveling, fitness classes and cheering for her Ohio State Buckeyes in her spare time. Additionally, she serves as a mentor in several youth programs through her public service work as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
