RECAP: Sunday May 22nd – Washington Heights to Dobbs Ferry
178th Street (Washington Heights) to Dobbs Ferry (Westchester County): 13 miles
Day 8 of the March for Farmworker Justice began in the shadow of the George Washington Bridge at beautiful Holyrood Episcopal Church/Iglesia Santa Cruz. Reverend Gladys Dias and numerous acolytes accompanied marchers as they began the day’s journey up Broadway.
At St. Stephen’s Methodist Church in Marble Hill, marchers enjoyed a gospel- and jazz-infused service, along with a delicious lunch served by Bronx Climate Justice North. Four miles later, marchers crossed the border to Westchester, where members of Obreros Unidos (Day Laborers United) were waiting with both encouragement and sustenance.
Their number growing, marchers made stops at St. John’s Episcopal Church (Yonkers) and Grace Episcopal Church (Hastings-on-Hudson) before arriving at their evening destination, South Presbyterian Church in Dobbs Ferry. Farmworkers shared stories, and the Raging Grannies sang protest songs. The evening ended with an Italian dinner served up by the Yonkers Federation of Teachers.
It was, said Day Captain Celia Baldwin, “a day of great fellowship and conversation.”
