The Youth Arts Group YAG is a multicultural group of high school students from the Hudson Valley who come together with the determination to create change in their lives and communities. One medium we use to manifest change is art. Every year, we host an annual event, "Art for Justice" in Albany NY. This event is part of Farmworker Albany Day. Themes within our artwork include breaking the barriers (racial, class, gender, etc.) that divide society, examining negative influences on youth, and sharing the voices of farmworkers and factory workers. It is our hope that this artwork inspires young people to find new creative ways to end prejudice and discrimination.
In 2016, we took part in the 200 mile March for Farmworker Justice from Long Island to Albany.
Art for Justice : May 28th in Saugerties, NY
Youth were invited to participate in two workshop sessions to create art (such as banners, street theater, puppets) for the March, walk with the core group for a segment, and participate in evening programming. You can see more details on our flyer: download here.
Youth Presence at Farmworker Albany Day
Marchers, allies, and youth converges in Albany on June 1st to demand equal rights for farmworkers in New York State.
Join Us Next Year
All youth - middle school to college- who want to create Art for Justice are invited to join us as we create art pieces that focus on issues affecting teen farmworkers, and all of us as consumers of New York products.
