The Youth Entrepreneurship Symposium is a one-day event that is designed to:
• Foster conversation about youth cooperative entrepreneurship with students and other stakeholders
• Share YEG’s model with other groups and students, and receive feedback
• Inspire local youth to achieve their own potential through dialog and the hands-on “YEG Challenge”
• Build community
2016 was our third year of partnership with SUNY Sullivan in Loch Sheldrake to host the event. This year, it took place on November 4th.
Each year, the agenda starts with a presentation by members of YEG – why they started a youth cooperative, what they have learned, and ways the model can be applied and replicated to help develop leadership and community revitalization. There is a YEG Challenge, in which teams of participating students are challenged to develop and present concepts. Last year the students came up with the idea for a new local cooperative business. This year they designed a new silkscreen product that conveys a social justice message, and devise an accompanying marketing and financials plan. Teams are assigned a coach who mentors their team. A panel of judges selected a winner after lunch.
