Selina Durio is a native of Long Island who holds a Bachelors Degree from the Pennsylvania State University, a Master's Degree from Long Island University - CW Post and a Certificate in Industrial Labor Relations from Cornell University. She is a 30-year educator in the North Babylon School District. Since May 2005 she has been an at-large member of the New York State United Teachers Board of Directors.
As a child of the 70’s and early 80’s in at the time racially turbulent North Babylon, Selina believes that all people could be all they put their mind to. She left New York and attended college during the era of calls for the end of apartheid in South Africa and the use of divestment as a means to that end. While in college Selina became an advocate for the less fortunate. She spoke out against racial injustice on the campus, while working on the larger global issue of segregation. This outspokenness often placed her in a position of physical danger with those who were not in agreement with her.
Coming back home to work in her Alma Mater, North Babylon, has been quite an experience. Being one of only a handful of minorities working in the district, becoming a Building Representative and eventually rising to the level of Union President was a journey of patience, tolerance and prayer. The same can be said for her rise to the position of an At-large Director on the Board of Directors of the New York State United Teachers. She works locally and nationally with many AFL-CIO constituency groups, like CBTU, LCLAA and AFT. She is the Vice-Chair of the American Federation of Teachers Black Caucus, a member of the board of the Long Island Federation of Labor and is a Trustee for the Long Island Chapter of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionist.
Over the past few years she has been awarded a Service Award from S.O.N.I.A.Y., Inc, for her assistance with their community after school program and most recently she was awarded the Educator of the Year by the Long Island Chapter of LCLAA in 2012.
Selina lives by the sayings of two great activists:
"He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it."
~Martin Luther King Jr.
"Activism is the rent I pay for living on this planet." ~Alice Walker
Selina is married to her love of 26 years, Benjamin and is the proud parent of two wonderful young men, Ander and Saben. She is a double PK (preacher's kid). Her mother is the retired Pastor of the Parkchester Baptist Church, Bronx New York and her late father was a licensed Minister, so she has grown up with 'service to others' as a priority.
