We believe that young powerful leaders, who are committed to justice and inclusivity, are essential to the well-being of our rural communities.
For over 30 years we have devoted our efforts to helping identify and nurture new generations of these leaders. Our Youth Empowerment Programs - Youth Arts Group (YAG), Youth Economic Education Group (YEG), Summer Overnight Leadership Camp, Summer Day Programs, and High School and College Internships offer creative approaches in experiential education that bring together diverse young leaders who are committed to working for change.
Our young leaders are overcoming immense obstacles. In addition to many of the traditional barriers of racism, adultism and poverty, many are first generation immigrants, and face language and cultural barriers. Often their parents are unfamiliar with the political and education systems, and that, combined with language barriers, makes it difficult for them to be allies to their children within these systems. There are also the realities of living in rural New York State, where there are few resources, little public transportation and a deep isolation.
Nonetheless, these young leaders, along with their allies, year in and year out, have been on the cutting edge of creating remarkable responses to the injustices of their lives. The Youth Empowerment Program of RMM is about nurturing leaders. At first glance, we seem to involve small numbers. But, through patience, persistence and determination, our leaders emerge and they in turn have impacted the lives of thousands. Take a look at our Youth Empowerment Programs, and you will understand why we are so proud of our members.
