The Rural Women’s Assembly was established 20 years ago because rural women face barriers of poverty, prejudice, language, isolation and a lack of skills to create, or take advantage of, resources and opportunities. Many deal with gender violence and lack support systems such as childcare, healthcare and transportation. Challenges are multi-generational, and younger women often lack experience, as well as opportunities to hope.
The Assembly is a unique and important opportunity for rural women to connect and gain strength from one another, from their allies and from workshop leaders as they develop strategies and networks for change through education.
Some 200 women, teenagers to elders, from across many rural areas of New York State gather, learn from and inspire one another – an experience that cuts across racial, cultural, geographic and economic boundaries. The Assembly gives women the unique opportunity to learn from one another as well as from social organizations and rural experts.
The workshops are a starting point for many women to learn how to continue their education as well as become advocates for themselves and their families in doctors’ offices, schools and in their own homes. Women and girls receive encouragement to develop their voices and share their stories. This is a unique opportunity for rural women from resource-deprived communities to not only be heard but to educate themselves and others about their lives, challenges, goals and dreams.
